Son AB and I wandered along Albany Hway in East Vic Park searching for a lunch spot. Lamenting that the nearby Prophet Lebanese wasn’t open for lunch, we spied the Sparrow’s Nest which happened to be on my wish list, so it was a fait accompli. An eclectic space with funky posters and an assortment of seats including a massive comfy leather sofa, this cafe offers an all-day breakfast for those hankering for eggs and bacon.
AB was immediately captivated by the pulled pork bun, and not being content with normal fries, ordered the beer battered fries with bbq sauce and 2 types of cheeses on the side. Holy moly. Carb/fat overload. Good job he was going to the gym afterwards.
This hunka hunka pork fest was further stuffed with crunchy red slaw and was a manly two-handed meal. Pulled pork seems to be the meat filling of choice these days, and AB finds it hard to look at anything else when this features on the menu. AB raved about the pork and said the slaw was the perfect foil for the richness of the meat. His eyes however, were much bigger than his belly as he could barely finish half of his decadent fries. Well I had to confirm of course if they were as good as he said. They were.
The Mexican wrap with chicken, red slaw and beans was the perfect light lunch for me. Crunchy, lightly toasted and flavoured with a hint of chilli, it went down a treat.
The girls working the cafe were delightful and happy to chat when they weren’t too busy. They are justifiably proud of the coffee they serve here, and my long macchiato was top notch. The coffee beans used are Yahava and very good.
